"In the race before Swope's, the second race of the day, jockey Jacob Roberts was halfway to the finish line when he heard a crack over the thundering of hooves.Over the sixth of 10 hurdles, the landing was just too intense for Once and Future King, said the horse's trainer, Dave Washer.
"(Roberts) said when he landed he heard a snap," Washer said. "The shoulder broke then and there."
Roberts fought to slow the 6-year-old gelding to a halt, but it was too late.
The injury was severe enough for veterinarians to euthanize the gelding on the track."
